Local Favorites & Hidden Gems
in New Orleans
Where locals actually eat (and tourists usually don’t find)
Let me tell you something about New Orleans…The best meals you’re going to have here?
They’re probably not the ones with a line wrapped around the block. Now don’t get me wrong — places like Commander’s Palace and Antoine’s Restaurant have earned their reputation. You should absolutely experience them at least once.
But if you really want to eat like a local…You’ve got to wander a little.
You’ve got to step off the main drag, trust a place that doesn’t look like much from the outside, and order something you didn’t plan on getting.
That’s where the magic lives in New Orleans.
This page is for those spots.
The places locals go on a Tuesday.
The places you hear about from a bartender, not a billboard.
The places that make you stop mid-bite and go, “Alright… this is it.”
What Makes a “Hidden Gem” in New Orleans?
In a city like this, “hidden gem” doesn’t always mean unknown.
Sometimes it means:
No flashy signage
No tourist crowd
No TikTok hype (yet)
Just really, really good food.
And usually:
a little history
a lot of personality
and recipes that haven’t changed in decades
Local Favorites & Hidden Gems
Domilise’s Po-Boy & Bar
If you blink, you might miss it.
Tucked away Uptown, this place has been quietly making some of the best po’ boys in the city for generations. And lemme tell ya, it’s small.
No frills. No nonsense.
Just a roast beef po’ boy that might ruin all other sandwiches for you. Of course they got shrimp and ham and cheese, but the roast beef is messy and tender and so well-flavored.
Vincent’s Italian Cuisine
This is one of those places locals almost hesitate to recommend… because they don’t want it getting too crowded. This is a small and intimate place. I had one of the best meals of my life here. Service is great too. Just as great neighborhood place.
It’s Old-school Italian, big portions, and that unmistakable feeling that you’ve stumbled into something real. The bread is obscene
Lil Dizzy’s Cafe
This is New Orleans comfort food at its finest.
Fried chicken, gumbo, red beans — the kind of meal that feels like it came straight out of someone’s grandmother’s kitchen.
Because in a way… it did.
Port of Call
Technically in the French Quarter… but somehow still feels like a locals’ spot.
Massive burgers, strong drinks, and a vibe that hasn’t changed in decades.
Pro tip: don’t come here if you’re in a rush.
Dey got sumada best hamburgers anywhere! Thick, rich, OMG! Get da baked patatah wit the sour cream, dawlin’. In the evening be prepares to wait, but you can sit at da bar if you wanna.
Barracuda Taco Stand
A little more modern, but still very much a neighborhood favorite.
Simple menu, great tacos, and the kind of outdoor setup that makes you want to hang out longer than you planned. This is my go-to place for tacos and such. The only seating is in the back in the patio. If it’s hot dey got fans. If it’s cold well they got some of those heaters.
How to Find Your Own Hidden Gems
Here’s the real secret…
Don’t just rely on lists (even this one).
Do this instead:
Walk a few blocks off the main streets
Look for places filled with locals
Ask your bartender where they eat
Trust spots that feel a little unpolished
New Orleans rewards curiosity.
Some of your best meals here won’t be planned.
Final Thought
At the end of the day, New Orleans isn’t just a food city.
It’s a discovery city. Sure, you can check off the big-name restaurants and have an incredible time.
But if you really want to understand this place… You’ve got to find your own favorite corner.
Your own go-to spot…Your own hidden gem.And once you do?
You’ll never look at this city the same way again.
